About Heidi:

Born and raised in Wiscasset, Maine, Heidi moved to Sitka, Alaska to attend Sheldon Jackson College directly after graduating high school. Heidi earned her degree in Outdoor Recreation, Elementary Education and then later earned her Master's in Special Education at University of Alaska Anchorage.

It was her love of the outdoors and low number of inhabitants that drew her to the Last Frontier. Heidi moved from Sitka to Fairbanks where she answered an ad in the paper for a handler. During her year as a handler for Yukon Quest musher, Andrew Lesh, Heidi met Darrin. Later they moved to Holy Cross then settled in Chistochina, in the Copper River Basin.

Heidi has been teaching both regular education and special education, specializing in children diagnosed with autism, emotional disturbance as well as severe behavioral issues, for over a decade. Heidi is the proud mom to Emily, who is now 16 years old.

About Darrin:

Darrin was born in Utah, and after living in several places overseas for a number of years, ended up in Colorado.

Darrin went onto join the army and ended up in Germany guarding the Berlin wall. Darrin was there when the wall went down. After that he came back to the states and attended college. Later he moved to Alaska to attend the University of Alaska Fairbanks where he obtained his degree in elementary and secondary education and secured a job in St Michael teaching jr high students. It was there that Darrin was introduced to dog mushing by Jerry Austin.

As it is with musher, 1 dog leads to 2 which leads to 3 which leads to 20. After teaching for a few years, Darrin decided that being a full time dog musher was where it's at. Darrin packed up and moved to the woods just south of Nenana, Alaska in Clear. It was here, in the woods where Heidi found him.
